State medical councils in India. Where to register, renew and verify a doctor.

Every registered medical practitioner in India holds a number from a State Medical Council or from the national register. That number goes on every prescription, certificate and receipt. This page lists all 29 councils the National Medical Commission recognises, with their websites, and explains how the National Medical Register fits in.

Why the registration number matters every day

Clause 1.4.1 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 requires every physician to display the registration number accorded by the State Medical Council or the Medical Council of India in the clinic and on all prescriptions, certificates and money receipts given to patients. The council that issued the number is part of what makes it checkable, so print both.

Most doctors are registered with a state council rather than the central body: of the 10.2 lakh doctors on the register in March 2017, about 52,000 were registered directly with the Medical Council of India. As of 30 June 2020 the register held 12.55 lakh doctors, with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh the largest councils.

How registration works

The pattern is the same across councils; the forms, fees and timelines are each council's own.

  • First registration

After the MBBS and the rotating internship, you register with a State Medical Council, usually the one for the state where you qualified or where you will practise. The certificate carries the number you will use for the rest of your career.

  • Additional qualifications

A postgraduate degree or diploma is entered against your name by the council as an additional qualification. Clause 1.4.2 of the 2002 regulations allows only recognised degrees and diplomas as suffixes to your name, so register them before you print them.

  • Practising in another state

Councils require a doctor practising in their state to be registered with them, which may mean a fresh registration or a no-objection certificate from the first council. The receiving council's website states its rule; check it before you move.

  • Renewal

Several councils renew registration at fixed intervals and tie renewal to continuing medical education credits. The interval and the credit requirement are set by each council; your council's website is the authority.

  • Verifying a doctor

The NMC's Indian Medical Register search covers registrations reported by the state councils up to 2021, with some councils' later data still being added. For a current check, use the council's own register search on its website.

  • States without a council

A few states and union territories have no council of their own; doctors there register with a neighbouring state's council. The NMC list above is the complete set of councils it recognises.

The National Medical Register

The NMC opened the National Medical Register portal on 23 August 2024 as a single, Aadhaar-verified record of every registered doctor. What it requires, from the NMC's letter to the State Medical Councils of 3 September 2024 and later reporting.

  1. Who registersEvery MBBS doctor already on the Indian Medical Register has to register again on the NMR; the register is meant to replace the IMR as the central repository.
  2. What you uploadYour Aadhaar, a digital copy of the MBBS degree certificate, and the registration certificate of the State Medical Council or Medical Council of India where you were first registered.
  3. Who verifiesThe application goes first to your State Medical Council for verification, then to the NMC. Colleges, institutions and councils are linked on the portal.
  4. Scope at launchOnly the basic MBBS qualification could be registered when the portal opened. The NMC said additional qualifications would follow.
  5. Where it standsNMC meeting minutes reported in June 2026 put certificates issued at about 1,800 against more than 30,000 applications pending verification. In August 2026 the NMC published draft amendment regulations proposing to make NMR registration mandatory; at the time of writing the Health Ministry's position was that it is voluntary and the draft had not been finalised.
  6. What to print meanwhileYour State Medical Council number remains the number on your prescriptions and certificates. Add the NMR unique ID when you receive it.

Your number, on every print.

Questions

Straight answers

Which medical council do I register with?

A State Medical Council, usually the one for the state where you qualified or will practise. The National Medical Register sits above the state councils; it does not replace the state registration you need to practise in a state.

Is National Medical Register registration mandatory?

As of October 2026 the Health Ministry described it as voluntary, and an NMC draft amendment published in August 2026 proposes to make it mandatory. Until a final regulation is notified, keep your state registration current and apply on the NMR portal when you can; applications are verified by your state council.

How do I verify a doctor's registration number?

Search the NMC's Indian Medical Register by name, registration number or council; it covers data reported up to 2021 with later years being added. For a current result, search the register on the state council's own website, linked in the table above.

Do I need to re-register if I move to another state?

Councils require registration for practice in their state, either a fresh registration or a transfer with a no-objection certificate from the first council. The receiving council's website gives its procedure and fee.

Which number goes on my prescription?

Your State Medical Council registration number, with the council's name. Clause 1.4.1 of the 2002 regulations requires it on every prescription, certificate and money receipt. The prescription pad maker on this site prints it under your name and beside the signature.

Why are some councils listed without a website?

The NMC's page lists no website for Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala's Travancore-Cochin council, Mizoram and Sikkim. They work through their offices; the NMC page carries each address and phone number.

This page reproduces public listings and reporting as of 20 October 2026. Council websites, renewal rules and the National Medical Register's status change; the council's own site and the NMC's notices are the authority. General information, not legal advice.
