In short
  • A KMC public notice dated 26 May 2026 says every person practising modern medicine in Karnataka must register with the council under the Karnataka Medical Registration Act, 1961 before starting practice.
  • Since the council's meeting of 27 June 2026, doctors coming from other states need no NOC from their earlier council; KMC registers them on self certification.
  • KMC asks for 30 credit hours in five years (maximum 6 a year) until age 65, and renewal at ₹1,000 plus 18% GST, with ₹500 plus GST for every year of delay.

If you practise modern medicine in Karnataka, you must hold a valid Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) registration before you start. KMC public notice KMC/Pub/Not/114/2026, dated 26 May 2026, says every such person "shall mandatorily obtain valid registration with the Karnataka Medical Council as required under the provisions of the Karnataka Medical Registration Act, 1961", and advises hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and colleges to verify a doctor's registration before appointing them. The council is a statutory body under Karnataka Act No. 34 of 1961. What follows is what the council's website showed on 31 Oct 2026.

What registrations and certificates does KMC issue?

KMC registers Indian graduates after internship (UG registration), doctors moving from other states, and foreign medical graduates. Its application form also covers additional PG degree or diploma registration, NOC, good standing certificate, duplicate certificate, true copy of the provisional registration certificate (PRC), change of name, certified testimonials, verification of a KMC certificate, re-registration and renewal. The council's revised rates, effective 3 Nov 2025, are below; each amount is charged with 18% GST.

Which documents do you need for KMC registration?

For UG registration after internship, the council's application form lists these documents, originals with photocopies:

  • Provisional degree certificate issued by the university
  • Provisional registration certificate issued by KMC (original)
  • Internship completion certificate from the college
  • Final year MBBS marks card (Part II)
  • SSLC marks card or birth certificate
  • Aadhaar card as ID and address proof

The same form lists a DME NOC, but a later notice on the KMC home page says undergraduates coming for permanent registration need "NO REQUIREMENT OF N.O.C. FROM AROGYA SOUDHA", as long as they book an online appointment before arriving. Another notice asks UG applicants to carry a white apron coat for the certificate photograph.

Doctors moving from another state no longer need an NOC from their earlier council. KMC's self certification notice cites a Department of Medical Education letter dated 9 June 2026 and the council's decision of 27 June 2026, and says registration "will be done on the basis of self certification by individual doctors". The self certification format is on the council website. For postgraduate qualifications, the requirements sheet asks for the original PG degree or provisional degree certificate, marks card and a bonafide certificate from the dean or principal stating the course is recognised.

How do you apply to KMC?

  1. Book an online appointment through the appointment link on the KMC website. Doctors moving from another state start on the "Other State Registration" page; foreign graduates use "FMG Registration".
  2. Pay the fee online.
  3. On the appointment day, report to KMC by 10:30 AM with originals and photocopies. The council asks doctors to report by then "irrespective of time slots given".
  4. After registration, log in as a practitioner on the KMC website for renewal, NOC and certificate requests.

KMC's working hours are 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, closed on the second Saturday and government holidays.

How often is KMC registration renewed, and how many CME hours do you need?

Once every five years. The council's CME page says doctors "are required to gain 30 Credit Hours in five years (maximum 6 Credit Hours / year)" until age 65, and after 65 no credit hours are needed "BUT RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION IS COMPULSORY ONCE IN EVERY 5 YEARS". Only one online credit hour a year counts towards the six; the other five must be earned offline. An 8-hour accredited programme earns two credit hours. Renewal is paid online through your practitioner login and, per the council's renewal steps, "Appointment and Physical Presence is not Necessary for Renewal". Our guide to registration renewal and CME credits compares states.

How can a clinic verify a KMC registration?

KMC offers a paid verification of a KMC registration certificate (₹200 plus GST, no appointment). We did not find a public doctor search on the KMC home page. The NMC's Indian Medical Register search lets anyone look up doctors registered with any state council by name, year, registration number or council, though NMC notes the data is being updated. See our glossary entry on the National Medical Register.

Where must your KMC registration number appear?

In your clinic and on every prescription, certificate and money receipt. Clause 1.4.1 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 says: "Every physician shall display the registration number accorded to him by the State Medical Council / Medical Council of India in his clinic and in all his prescriptions, certificates, money receipts given to his patients." Clause 1.4.2 restricts the suffixes after your name to recognised degrees and qualifying diplomas or memberships. Vitels prints prescriptions on your own letterhead, A4 or A5, with your registration number, and checks that registration when you sign up. Our free clinic letterhead maker helps you set the header.
