    What the rules say

What the rules say a doctor's letterhead may carry

The Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 and the NMC guidelines of 06.10.2026 decide what goes in the header and what stays off it.

    • 2002 Regulations, clause 1.4.1

      The registration number goes on

Every physician shall display the registration number from the State Medical Council or the Medical Council of India "in his clinic and in all his prescriptions, certificates, money receipts". A letterhead is used for all three, so the tool will not print without it.

    • 2002 Regulations, clause 1.4.2

      Recognised degrees only

Physicians shall display as suffix to their names "only recognized medical degrees or such certificates/diplomas and memberships/honours which confer professional knowledge or recognizes any exemplary qualification/achievements".

    • 2002 Regulations, clause 7.3

      Missing either is misconduct

Clause 7.3 lists, among acts of misconduct, not displaying the registration number "in his clinic, prescriptions and certificates etc." or violating clause 1.4.2 on qualifications.

    • 2002 Regulations, clause 7.13

Signboard contents, and the same on the pad

A signboard carries only the name, qualifications from a University or statutory body, titles, speciality, and the registration number with the State Medical Council. "The same should be the contents of his prescription papers."

    • 2002 Regulations, clause 6.1.2; NMC guidelines 06.10.2026, para 9.2

      No photograph on the letterhead

"Printing of self photograph, or any such material of publicity in the letter head" is self-advertisement and unethical conduct. Sketches, diagrams and pictures of the human system are allowed. The 2026 NMC guidelines repeat the rule.

    • NMC guidelines 06.10.2026, para 8.1(iii) and (ix)

      No superiority claims

No "best", "No. 1", "leading", "most trusted", "top" or "unmatched" unless objectively verifiable, and no "Guaranteed cures" or "100% success". The tool checks the tagline and footer for these words.

    What a doctor's letterhead carries

Header and footer only. The body stays blank for letters, referrals, reports and certificates you write or print on it.

    3. Doctor's full name

    5. Speciality only where you hold a qualification in it (clause 7.20)

    Questions

    Straight answers

What should be on a doctor's letterhead in India?

The clinic name, the doctor's name, recognised qualifications, speciality if qualified, the registration number with the council, and the address, phone and hours. Clause 7.13 of the 2002 regulations lists name, qualifications, titles, speciality and registration number for the signboard and says the same should be the contents of prescription papers.

Is the registration number compulsory on a letterhead?

Clause 1.4.1 requires the registration number on all prescriptions, certificates and money receipts given to patients, and in the clinic. Anything on the letterhead that goes to a patient is usually one of those, so print it. Clause 7.3 treats not displaying it as misconduct.

Can I put my photo on my letterhead?

No. Clause 6.1.2 of the 2002 regulations calls printing a self photograph on the letterhead an act of self-advertisement and unethical conduct, and paragraph 9.2 of the NMC guidelines of 06.10.2026 says the same. A clinic logo, sketches and diagrams of the human body are allowed.

Can I add fellowships and memberships after my name?

Clause 1.4.2 allows recognised medical degrees and "such certificates/diplomas and memberships/honours which confer professional knowledge or recognizes any exemplary qualification/achievements". If you are unsure whether a fellowship qualifies, ask your State Medical Council before printing a batch.

Should I print the letterhead on A4 or A5?

A4 suits referral letters, reports and certificates that are filed or scanned. A5 suits a prescription pad and fits a patient's folder. The tool prints either, plain for typed letters or ruled for handwriting, and keeps the same letterhead for the prescription, certificate and receipt makers.

This page summarises the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 as amended up to 8 October 2016 and the NMC Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication of 06.10.2026, as read on 26 Oct 2026. It is general information, not legal advice. The tool checks for common phrases only; you remain responsible for what the letterhead says, and your State Medical Council may read the rules more strictly.

    1. 1 You
    2. 2 Your clinic

    Who should we call?

Your name and the number we can reach you on.
