IPD meaning: the in-patient department, explained What the Health Ministry's standards and NABH say an IPD involves, and why a clinic does not have one.
IPD is where admitted patients stay: the wards, the beds, the daily rounds and the discharge at the end. Here is what the Health Ministry's standards and NABH attach to it, and why an OPD clinic sits outside it.

- The Indian Public Health Standards 2022 and the NABH hospital standards (6th edition, effective 1 Jan 2025) both expand IPD as In-Patient Department.
- IPHS 2022 expects medical and surgical specialists in district hospitals to "make IPD rounds every day".
- The 2002 conduct regulations require a physician to keep the records of "indoor patients" for 3 years from the start of treatment.
IPD, the in-patient department, is the part of a hospital that cares for patients who are admitted and stay in a bed under its care until discharge, as against the OPD, where patients are seen and go home. Admission is the line between the two. Once a patient is admitted, the hospital takes on a bed, nursing care around the clock, daily doctor rounds, a running record of the stay, and a discharge at the end. You will also see IP, "indoor" or "ward" used for the same side of a hospital.
What is an IPD in a hospital?
The wards and the work that happens in them. The Health Ministry's Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) 2022, Volume I, for sub-district and district hospitals, lists "IPD In-Patient Department" in its abbreviations and lists procedures separately under "Out-Patient Department" and "In-Patient Department". For specialists it says: "Both surgical and medical specialist are expected to make IPD rounds every day." Its staffing table plans staff nurses "for OPD, IPD shifts", and its facility checklist asks whether "Records of IPD are maintained and complete in each service area".
The Health Ministry's Electronic Health Record Standards for India (2016) draw the line from the other side. Its glossary defines outpatient care as "Care given a person who is not bedridden. It is also called ambulatory care." and length of stay as "The number of days an individual stays in a hospital or inpatient facility." Our OPD vs IPD entry compares the two in a table, including how surveys, GST and insurance treat each.
Where does the definition come from?
Two standards spell it out. IPHS 2022 lists "IPD In-Patient Department", and the NABH Accreditation Standards for Hospitals (6th edition, effective 1 January 2025) list "IP In-Patient" and "IPD In-Patient Department" in their abbreviations. NABH's chapter on access, assessment and continuity of care says "Patients that match the organisation's resources are admitted using a defined process", and standard AAC.2 asks for "a well-defined registration and admission process". At the other end, AAC.12 requires that "A discharge summary is given to all the patients leaving the organisation". The discharge summary entry covers that document.

Does a single-doctor clinic have an IPD?
Not unless it admits patients to beds. A consultation clinic where every patient is seen and sent home the same day is all OPD. The one rule in the 2002 conduct regulations that names in-patients is clause 1.3.1: every physician "shall maintain the medical records pertaining to his / her indoor patients for a period of 3 years from the date of commencement of the treatment". A doctor who adds beds takes on that duty for those patients, and should also check how the state's clinical establishments rules classify a facility with beds before admitting anyone.
What it means for a small clinic
For most clinics, IPD comes up when a patient needs admission. The doctor writes a referral, the patient goes to a hospital, and the clinic keeps its own OPD note of the visit and the referral. The hospital opens its own IPD file. When the patient returns with a discharge summary, the clinic notes it on the next OPD visit.
Vitels is built for outpatient clinics: registration, token queue, consultation, prescription and billing. It has no IPD, ward or bed module. See OPD management software.
Questions
What is the full form of IPD?
In-Patient Department. IPHS 2022 and the NABH hospital standards both use this expansion. IP is short for in-patient.
What is the difference between OPD and IPD?
An OPD patient is seen and goes home. An IPD patient is admitted and stays in a bed until discharge. See the OPD vs IPD entry for a fuller comparison.
How long must IPD records be kept?
Clause 1.3.1 of the 2002 conduct regulations asks physicians to keep indoor patient records for 3 years from the start of treatment, in the Appendix 3 format. Hospitals may have longer periods under state law or their own policy.
