CME credit: hours, who awards them, and renewal The 30-hours-in-five-years rule, the state councils that count them, and the 2023 regulations that are on hold.
CME credit is the currency of registration renewal in a growing number of states. The base rule is one sentence in the 2002 conduct regulations; the arithmetic and the paperwork come from each council.

- Regulation 1.2.3: a physician "should participate in professional meetings as part of Continuing Medical Education programmes, for at least 30 hours every five years" and compliance "shall be informed regularly" to the council.
- The NMC's 2023 regulations would have fixed 30 credit hours every five years and five-yearly licence renewal, but they were held in abeyance on 23 August 2023.
- Councils set their own counts: Karnataka asks for 30 credit hours in five years with a cap of 6 a year; Gujarat's guideline reads 30 hours a year or 150 credit points in five years.
A CME credit is the hour or point a medical council awards for attending an accredited Continuing Medical Education programme, and regulation 1.2.3 of the 2002 conduct regulations asks a physician to participate "for at least 30 hours every five years" and report compliance to the council. The full text: "A Physician should participate in professional meetings as part of Continuing Medical Education programmes, for at least 30 hours every five years, organized by reputed professional academic bodies or any other authorized organisations. The compliance of this requirement shall be informed regularly to Medical Council of India or the State Medical Councils as the case may be."
How many CME credits are required?
The national floor is the 30 hours in five years above. What a doctor actually has to show depends on the state medical council, because renewal is a creature of each state's Act. Two examples from council pages read on 30 October 2026:
- Karnataka Medical Council: doctors "are required to gain 30 Credit Hours in five years (maximum 6 Credit Hours / year) by attending various conference / CME / workshop till the age of 65 YEARS and get their KMC Registration renewed once in 5 years"; after 65 credit hours are not required but renewal still is. The council states it is "the only body who is eligible of accrediting CME credit points" in the state.
- Gujarat Medical Council: its CME guideline says a physician "should earn 30 hours per year or 150 Credit Points for every 5 years", with accreditation at the council's discretion.
Other councils publish their own tables, caps on online credit and rules on pharma-sponsored events. The state-by-state detail is in medical council registration renewal and CME credits.
Did the NMC 2023 regulations change the CME rule?
They were meant to. Regulation 4 of the NMC Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations 2023 said an RMP "should attend continuing professional development programs regularly each year, totaling at least 30 credit hours every five years", that only colleges, institutions and societies "accredited or authorized by EMRB/State Medical Councils" could award them, and that "Renewal of License to practice should be done every 5 years" after submitting CPD documentation. The Gazette notification of 23 August 2023 held those regulations "in abeyance with immediate effect" and adopted the 2002 regulations instead. Some councils have nonetheless written 30-hours-in-five-years into their own renewal rules.
Who can award CME credit?
The council of the state, or a body it accredits. Regulation 1.2.3 speaks of programmes "organized by reputed professional academic bodies or any other authorized organisations"; Karnataka's page says accreditation by anyone other than the council "will not be considered valid". A certificate from an unaccredited event is a certificate, not a credit.
What does a single-doctor clinic do with this?
Keep a folder, paper or digital, with every CME certificate and its credit count, and note the registration date so the five-year renewal window is known. A doctor in Karnataka who needs 6 a year cannot catch up in year five, because of the annual cap. Renewal, fees and the documents each council asks for are in the renewal post above; this entry only defines the credit.
Questions
Is CME mandatory for doctors in India?
Regulation 1.2.3 asks for at least 30 hours every five years and says compliance shall be informed to the council. Whether it is checked at renewal, and how many credits are needed, depends on the state council.
Is a CME credit the same as a CME hour?
Councils use both words. Karnataka's page says a programme of 8 hours is allotted two credit hours and one under 4 hours gets none. Read the table of the council you are registered with.
Do doctors over 65 need CME credits?
Karnataka exempts doctors over 65 from credit hours but not from renewal every five years. Other councils differ; check your own.
