Medicines

Add medicines with AI, typed or spoken, and you approve every one

Every clinic keeps a list of the medicines its doctors prescribe. In Vitels, a doctor or clinic admin can type up to 20 medicine names, or say them in a voice note, and the AI drafts the composition, type, company and a one-line description for each. Each draft is a card you accept, edit, reject or skip. Nothing is saved until you accept it, and the AI never sets the prescription status.

In short

What does "Add medicines using AI" do in Vitels?

It turns a list of medicine names into reviewed entries in your clinic's medicine list. You type the names or record a voice note, press Generate, and the AI fills in what it knows about each name. You read each card and press Accept, or fix it, or throw it away. Accepted medicines appear in the prescription pad search for your clinic straight away. It is a faster way to build the list, not a way to prescribe, and it is one part of the AI in Vitels.

Why does the AI not fill in the prescription status?

Because whether a medicine is prescription-only is a matter of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules and the pack label, not of what a language model recalls. Vitels asks the person adding the medicine to read the label and choose. The same applies to the composition and strength: the draft is a starting point that saves typing, and the card says so. Our post on what the doctor still checks when software fills in medicine details lists the fields worth a second look.

The helper is also not a prescribing tool. It never appears on the prescription pad, it never suggests a medicine for a patient, and it has no idea who the patient is. It builds the list the pad searches, and that is all.

What does "Not found" mean?

It means the model would rather say nothing than guess. The instructions it works under say a wrong entry is worse than no entry, and that it must never invent a product, company or composition. A brand that is new, regional or spelled unusually may come back Not found. Add it manually from the same drawer; the manual form is one click away.

Names that are already in your clinic's list come back as In your list and are not looked up again, so a repeated run costs nothing.

What does the voice note understand?

The speech service is set to Indian English. In practice that means it handles a doctor saying "Dolo 650, Pan D aur Augmentin" well enough, because the brand names are English words and the joining words are dropped by the extraction step. It is not Hindi speech recognition: a note spoken in Hindi with Hindi medicine terms will come back patchy. The transcript is editable for exactly this reason. Our post on voice entry in Indian English and Hinglish explains what works and what does not.

In Vitels

How it works, step by step

Rolling out to clinics from November 2026. Open Medicines, then Add, then Add medicines using AI.

  • 1. Type the names

Enter medicine names separated by commas, up to 20 at a time. Brand names, generic names or a mix. Names already in your list are recognised and skipped.

  • 2. Or say them

Tap the microphone and record a voice note of up to 60 seconds. Azure AI Speech transcribes it in Indian English; it copes with Hinglish phrasing. The AI then keeps only the medicine names from the transcript and drops the rest.

  • 3. Edit the text first

Words that came from the voice note are highlighted so you can fix a misheard brand before anything is generated. Nothing is looked up until you press Generate.

  • 4. Generate

Each name comes back as one card: In your list, In review with a draft, or Not found. A draft has the composition, type, company and a one-line description. Every draft is labelled AI-generated, check before accepting.

  • 5. Review each card

Accept, Edit, Reject, Skip or Add manually. Reject has an Undo. Accept saves the medicine through the same path as the manual form, with the same checks. You choose the prescription status from the pack label; the AI leaves it blank.

  • 6. Left something unreviewed?

Cards still In review when you close the drawer go to Requested Medicines as Approval pending, where a doctor or clinic admin finishes the job later.

  • What is sent, what is not

Only the medicine names, or the audio clip, go to the models. No patient data, no consultation, no clinic name, no staff detail. Vitels does not store the audio. [AI data handling](/ai-data-handling).

  • Caps

60 lookups per clinic per hour and 300 voice notes per clinic per day. The feature is switched on per clinic and is available on every plan.

What to check before you press Accept

The draft saves typing; the person saves the record. Two minutes per batch is enough.

  1. Composition and strength match the pack: salt names and milligrams.

  2. Type is right: tablet, capsule, syrup, drops, injection, cream.

  3. Company matches the pack you actually stock or prescribe.

  4. Prescription status chosen from the pack label, since the AI leaves it blank.

  5. Brand name spelled the way your doctors search for it.

  6. The one-line description says nothing clinical you would not want in your own words.

  7. Not found items added manually, or dropped.

  8. Cards you did not get to are finished later in Requested Medicines.

Not for everyone

What this helper is not

We would rather you find this out here than after you have moved your patients in.

  • Not a prescribing tool: it never appears on the prescription pad and never suggests a medicine for a patient.
  • Not a dictation tool: it captures medicine names only, not consultation notes or prescriptions.
  • Not a drug database with interactions or doses: no decision support of any kind.
  • Not Hindi speech recognition: Indian English transcription that copes with Hinglish phrasing.
Questions

Straight answers

Does it work in Hindi?

The voice note is transcribed in Indian English and copes with Hinglish phrasing such as "aur" between names. It is not Hindi speech recognition. Typed names work in any spelling the model recognises, and you can edit the transcript before generating.

Can it write a prescription?

No. It only prepares entries for your clinic's medicine list. The prescription pad stays keyboard-first and the doctor writes every line.

Does it check drug interactions or doses?

No. Vitels has no clinical decision support, by design and permanently. The draft contains composition, type, company and a one-line description, nothing about dosing or interactions.

What if a brand is not found?

The card says Not found and you add it manually from the same drawer. The model is told that a wrong entry is worse than none, so it does not guess.

Is my voice note stored?

No. The clip goes to the speech service for transcription and is not stored by Vitels. Only the names you accept become records.

Who can use it?

Doctors and clinic admins. Attendants do not see the Medicines page. The helper is switched on per clinic and is available on every plan.
